We started the basics of blocking for our upcoming play “The 1940s Radio Hour” tonight. It’s a really funny script – I hope we’ll be able to do it justice.
I play Johnny Cantone – a Sinatra wannabe sleaze who gets progressively drunk during the course of the show. He’s the “star” of the cavalcade, but much more a star in his own mind first. My first song “Love is Here to Stay” is pretty straight, then by the time I get to “I’ll Never Smile Again” I’m only singing a couple of verses and letting the backing group carry it. By the third song I am trashed and hand it off to someone else while announcing I’m leaving.
This part is really fun to do because I get to be a total sleaze – hitting on all the girls, getting drunker and drunker and goofing around with the other characters and props and such. Really loose and random. The last couple of parts I’ve played were pretty stiff, so this is really turning out to be entertaining for me.
